Is child protection to protect kids from adults or teachers from pupils?

As I sat at my desk the other week, the window behind me smashed in, scattering glass everywhere. Two boys, who I had kept behind in lunchtime because of their bad behaviour in the lesson, had return to “get me back” by putting the window through!

I can’t believe this. They behave badly. I keep them back for 5 minutes because of their bad behaviour. They think that justifies showering me in broken glass!

The kids got an internal suspension for one day. Weak management or what? It’s no wonder the kids in my school behave so badly. Teachers are powerless against kids who have no respect and don’t care about anything or anyone but themselves (and sometimes not even themselves).

I have definitely seen a deterioration in standards of behaviour over the last five years. Who’s to blame? If you listen to the kids, it’s not them. They have loads of reasons to refuse to accept responsibility for their behaviour. What about parents? In my school, plenty of the pupils are the kids of parents who attended the school and raised hell themselves! Talk about parental role models. What about government and society? There’s more money spent on wars than education….., rant, rant, rant. Enough from my soapbox.

I s’pose I’ll add this incident to my list of physical and mental threats received since becoming a teacher:

I once had a pupil threaten to blow my head off with his dad’s shotgun: I had only asked him (politely) to be quiet while I took the register!

I count my blessings that gun related incidents are very rare in the UK. It really scares me when I see what has gone on in schools in the States. You deserve medals for bravery.

All the best and stay safe from Crazy Class
