Happy days

I know that I have gone on about all the shit stuff in teaching but I have also had some really good times in the classroom. (ok for me that’s about 20/80 split in favour of the shit times). The good lessons, where everything clicks and the kids get it and you’re in the groove, are great. At the time it doesn’t matter about all the bad times because the feeling of connecting is very powerful. At times I have felt really good knowing that I have made a difference at the end of a lesson and, for me, that is the ultimate reward in teaching (and I am being sincere).
I have had some really great classes over the years. With these classes everything came together. I suppose it was a mixture of the group dynamic, the lessons, the individuals or just something that got the whole thing to click (on my side of the experience anyway).
I taught this one top group where every lesson was a joy. The kids were so perceptive and had reached a level of maturity that I could really cut loose and teach how I wanted. For me this represented the best of my teaching experience and I gratefully acknowledge the participation of that class for giving me that opportunity. (The class also got lots of A’s and A* at GCSE, but I’m not taking credit for this as this was a top group and would have done really well left to their own devices).
Sometimes you have to go with the flow in teaching and get a laugh when you can. It helps to reduce stress.
Read on for a couple of classics from my classroom.
