PGCE - are you tough enough?
They say that the PGCE is one of the most intensive courses going. I agree, you can expect a steep learning curve. Start as a newbie in September and finish by the early Summer fully equipped to take on the world ….. yeah right! The course I went on started very pleasantly in a uni lecture .We looked at some theoretical stuff and practiced a few things. The best lecturers were the ones who were still teaching. The other more academic types hadn’t seen a real class for a while and were very smug about their educational theories. I’d like to see them walk-the-talk in today’s schools. The peace and jovial atmos began to be replaced by anxiety and would soon be shattered in our first school placements.

After the first school placement, we returned to base full of stories about what happened to us.
Some students did not return. Missing in action. Never to return. The experience was too much. For example, one guy told his class off and kept them in. The kids got him back by slashing the tyres on his bike and sending him death threats. It’s good to know that the youth of today can keep things in perspective. It was a shame that this guy quit because I thought he’d be a good teacher but we will never know. The moral of the story is, don’t ride a bike to school and never read any letters that look like they were scribed by a thirteen year old.
Those who came back swapped stories of their first placements in an excited frenzy.
Student teachers. Beware of the dark side.
