Praise Be!
It has been proved that praising good behaviour as well as good work dramatically improves pupil performance and relationships.
Praising helps to create a positive learning environment where achievements are celebrated. Praise creates a upward spiral and has the knock on effect of increasing the self esteem of your pupils. This can create a self fulfilling success prophesy.
So how can I use praise to improve behaviour in the class room?
1 Make it clear what you want your pupils to do and how you want them to behave.
2 Make it clear what is acceptable and not acceptable behaviour.
3 Try to focus on the type of behaviour that you want and praise it.
4 Do not reward bad behaviour. Giving your attention to poor behaviour is an indirect reward.
5 Make sure you use honest praise and not praising for the sake of it.
6 Celebrate your pupils success.for example : put positive comments in books, Make wall displays of their work, give individuals a round of applause for good behaviour and work. Make a wall chart of good work and behaviour. It introduces some healthy competition.
7 ask a senior member of class to come into the lesson and praise the class and individuals.
8 Catch the pupils doing something right!
9 Phone or write home to tell them how good their child’s behaviour is.
10 Send notes to form tutors and year heads telling of good behaviour and work.
11 A few sweets wont do any harm as a reward.
12 If your school hasn’t got a good rewards system, get one together quickly!
